There’s a fine line between gifting and lending. There’s also a fine line between proving a point using visual aid, and redesigning existing OCs with intent to use out of spite because they said something you didn’t agree to when they didn’t lend or gift said character design
Frankly, if someone was being a bag of dicks, and the original designers want to pull back due to no longer wanting to be associated with this person or their project, then by all means I’m all for demanding the return of the designs. Unless of course they bought designs through say adopts or otherwise. Then the original designer no longer own that design. Which is why I didn’t feel like being a shit and taking back the design Rinj bought from me.
