I don’t think he gets it. Characters who fawn over canon characters and have super natural live saving capabilities and have the canon character(s) instantly fall in love with them after they save their lives is boring and generic as hell.
Now I have seen some instances where fan characters don’t want nothing to do with a canon character and that character forces himself on them. That works and is not boring at all. What I’m trying to say is, a canon x OC can work, if done right. The same way with a self insert. If it’s done tastefully and not a completely generic Gary Stu/Mary Sue like some of these fan characters can get, it can be very interesting.
