Were actually DID have a page at one point on ED. I remember reading it and being like, Oh, so this is the guy that said "Maybe you don't mind you're inbred but..." I actually used to use Were as test subject on TLK theories. If he flipped I knew the "bad" side of the fandom just might. I never had an issue with Kovu/Kiara being cousins (they aren't I know but were gonna be) because my parents were 2nd cousins. I pointed that out and got the above response. Don't know why it got removed.
It probably got removed in the server move.
I just had a really weird thought: What if Scar's real name IS Scar? I've seen headcanons where he and Mufasa are only half-siblings (Nala15 and another I can't think of... DemiDee?) What if he was named "Scar" because his existence was a "scar" on the King and Queen's relationship? As to how he got the scar... what if he gave it to himself so he could say he took the name to sound cooler instead of saying the truth? I'm not sure I believe it but it's interesting.
A possible theory that I could see working. As long as it doesn’t turn into a trope-y Scar apologist story.
post/157285701709/tlk-theories <- Just add to the end of blog address. My current theories can be seen in this post. Since I tried to back them up, and the ask box is tiny. 1. Rafiki came to the Pride Lands when Mufasa was a new King. 2. Mufasa didn't know exactly what happened when Scar's Guard fell, just rumors. 3. (part of 2 in the post) Scar was always a brat and the Power of the Roar made it worse. 4. Nala's father was neighboring prince/king that had an affair with Sarafina
Basically yes or their understanding of polite behavior as a writer. Plenty of blogs will happily take a free copy and review your book, its just a matter of asking. Begging for reviews is an amateur behavior, or so my online research says. No one wants you to constantly say review the book or insist you only review if you've got something good to say. Publishing a book is not like a fanfic where you can say no critics please. Goodreads has good advice about accepting "bad" reviews for authors.
Me I want "Shadowland" in the Live Action one. Just because its so beautiful. Though I'd honestly laugh if they do "The Madness of King Scar". If TLG doesn't shut up the Scar's-Nala's-Dad peeps, that should. :)
Oh I’d love to see that too!
Gota remember, TLK purists don’t listen to anything given to them canonically after the first film. And most purists are in the middle of this Nala’s Dad identity war.
I'm going to explain tracing how I always do. Who remembers learning to write? How'd you do that? You traced the letters. You did it until muscle memory kicked in and you could make the shapes yourself. The first few were sloppy, but you got better with practice. I bet you never think about it any more. Drawing is the same thing - if you can't get the shapes down, trace. Just don't post it as YOUR art. *You being the reader, not you Kash.
Exactly how I learn new things offline. I trace till it becomes easy for me to draw by memory(It’s how I learned to draw humans recently actually) but I never share the results and try to find my style afterward as I grow to understand how to draw it. It’s okay to trace to learn new cognitive skills like this. But it’s never okay to claim yours donut steel or make money off it.
Why's it accepted to reference screencaps, clip art, books etc. but not fan art if the artist allows referencing? A few don't due to the Reference=tracing confusion people have. What's the difference between trying to replicate a screenshot/illustration and doing the same with a fanart piece? Or putting different characters in place of the ones in the ref? So long as you link to the ref. I'm likely being dense right now, but I'd like an answer to point to. Thanks.
Tough question.
I think it varies from person to person on the answer to that question. But I’ll give you my best answer I can.
It bothers me greatly when artists allow people to reference their art only for those people to just out right trace their artwork and pass it off as their original the art donut steel. But the artist just keeps feeding that bad habit by supporting their activity.
As for referencing with permission, it’s fine as long as it’s credited, linked back to the source, and the referencer isn’t lying that the artist gave them permission. I’ve encountered people who have asked for permission to “reference” their artwork only to not wait for an answer and then say they asked assuming that’s as good as having been granted permission. I’ve also encountered recolor babies who’ve turned fan art into a base then ask after posting the traced base(This in other fandoms) expecting to use their disability to gain favorship with the artist.
As long as
- You ask for permission and receive permission before going ahead and referencing
- Credit and link back to the source
- Don’t out right copy/trace the original line for line after receiving permission to reference
You should be fine. It doesn’t necessarily count if you ask afterward or ask then go ahead and do it anyway without any word.
Passing tracing off as referencing ticks me off. Because I can reference/"redraw" most styles well enough it looks traced, and there's no way to prove otherwise. If it's close enough, you're screwed. Even if you draw on paper, one can say you just held the paper over the screen. I rely on screencaps for refs. I take pride in my mimic skills. Tracing-as-ref'ing takes away my motivation to draw fan art, because I don't have time for drama over stuff I didn't do.
I understand where you’re coming from. I take pride in my being able to replicate the style as well. And it’s okay to reference from screenshots or even official clipart or story books. It’s not okay to trace and call it referencing expecting to get away with the theft.
A little tip for those of you out there that rely on screenshot references: Open up a certain scene in Youtube(AMV makers provide the best unedited source material) and use the [,] and [.] keys on your keyboard to backtrack or fast forward through the clip till you find the right reference shot. I recommend pausing the video as you do this however.
There's one thing I hate about 6NA. There's sets like it for other fandoms/movies. I had an Aladdin set, Pocahontas, I've heard there were ones for Little Mermaid. Yet. Almost no one knows about them, it seems. (And the books read like fanfics anyway.) I would have to check, but I don't the Aladdin and Pocahontas wikis have scans of those books like TLK's does. Maybe TLK's just a bigger fandom, but it annoys me that 6NA is forever when the others aren't.
Huh, I had no idea other movies had these types of chapter books. I thought it was just TLK.
Could Kovu have had parents before Zira and Scar "took him in", and thus have had a different name before he was adopted? I'm working on plotting out my fanfics, and this is one idea I've considered.
Well, it’s never stated that he was an orphan and Scar indeed wasn’t his father. That he just took him in. So it’s a possibility he could have been abandoned or Zira’s son from another lion. The possibilities are endless with Kovu’s origins.
