Here’s that character redesign I was talking about :D

On the left is the god awful first design xD Scars everywhere and HC with green and red x.x

I changed up her design on the right. I’m planning to perhaps make her the mum of Scar. Her eye is actually bloodied from a previous fight and the only scars she has are the ones over her eye and neck.

Also, the two drawings are years apart hehe practice makes an artist better! Don’t use bases guys! (unless it’s for color testing but still don’t upload hehe cx)

I actually like the redesign. She’s very natural colored and looks like she would blend in with the TLK world. And the common HC color choice trope are Red and Blue. I like the change up you chose here. 

I was doing a study session with a TLK screencap, pose practice mostly, and I was wondering…are the poses too heavily referenced to use as my own art?

Wow it is way late for me to be replying to this haha. They don’t look too heavily referenced to me? At least for Nala her weight is pushed further forward. Simba on the other hand looks heavily referenced. Perhaps push him forward or lift a paw to make it look like he’s taking a step? 

Hey, ok this is my first tlk oc and I was struck with the sudden urge to make her. Her backstory isn’t complete just yet but I know she’s probably Vitani’s sister (i know super unoriginal). Her name is also a work in progress but right now it’s Mzigo meaning Burden. I want her to either be Nala or Zira’s daughter but I can’t decide. Unfortunetly i did use a base but I want to start drawing my own soon. thanks in advance :) 

Unfortunately this can’t be posted privately. However I do like what you did with her design. Perhaps darken the main pelt a little bit by mixing in a touch of red or orange so it doesn’t she doesn’t look too outta place? Can I also offer Shaka, Shida, Kera, or Shari instead? These all mean trouble in Swahili. These seem like they’d suit her more. 

I just made a character design with partial heterochromia. Is it really that bad?

Btw. I find HC pretty annoying too in red-blue combination.

Actually that’s pretty nicely done! It’s subtle but doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb. I hope you continue to use this character c: 

As promised, my art progress. These are my TLK rolepaly lion characters, left are character sheets (and desings) dated back to January 2015 when I gave up tracing and started actively drawing my own stuff and right are current refs I drew yesterday.

How many more “I trace because I can’t draw” we need to hear before people realize tracing won’t get you anywhere? :D

You’re going to hear it one last time from me: I trace if I need to learn something new, to get a better handle on its structure and to make a shape skeleton for future drawing reference. But tracing and claiming yours because one can’t draw is ignorance. Anyone can draw if they put their heart into it and learn.

since we’re sharing, here’s mine.

i normally trace a pose to get a basic shape and work around that. but that’s for my own stuff that nobody actually gives a crap about. eyeballing this was… hard.

Eyeballing is hard but the more you practice it the better you become. That’s how I reference half the time. 

I actually used Sarafina as a refrence for Neema x3

I’ll throw in my “referencing vs. tracing” thing here too since I’m being accused of tracing screentshots…

You can see it was very referenced, but my personal spin on the Disney style still shines through. And when overlayed, they don’t even begin to match up.

Mocking Mafuma aside, tho your referenced pic is very nicely done. There is no harm in referencing. Especially if you dunno how to draw the thing it is you’re trying to draw. I should point out that professional artists have to use references for the subject that they’re suppose to be drawing either by contract or by commission. Disney animators would never have animated on model without model sheets to reference from. But according to Mafuma us regarding referencing is okay v tracing is bad is double standards. If an artist does not learn to use references they will not better themselves. Even if an artist loudly proclaims they don’t reference any material at all.
